Vedic Astrology Overview
Vedic astrology is an age-old science and is much different from the western calculation methodology. Vedic astrology, if learned properly from one’s childhood under a correct spiritual guide will enable one to make very accurate predictions.
Vedic astrology is still taught in Kashi, Hindu Visva Vidyalaya, located in Varanasi, proper and many other places where children learn this science including in our own place in Vrindaban at the Red Stone Temple, Ramanreti, Vrindaban, India.
Learning this science requires dedication and memorizing many ancient Vedic verses so the scientific art of calculation is learned. In modern days some scholars of astrology are changing this age-old calculation process and establishing their own new ways by writing Sanskrit Slokas (verses). We have come to know this secret as some of our devotees and students have studied from various sources. For example, Chanakya Niti, printed hundred years ago, is different now, many verses are replaced and many are removed from the book. This is just one example. Therefore please do not take it for granted that the predictions for your zodiac sign will always come out exactly as what is predicted here for that sign.
The Rasis (signs) in Vedic calculation go like this:
Chu, Che, Cho, Laa, Li, Lu, Le Lo, A -----are called Mesa or Aries EE,I, U, E, O, Vaa, Vi, Vu, Ve Vo ----are called Vrsabha or Taurus Kaa, Ki, Ku, Gha, ìa (here the alphabet Na is pronounced as it is pronounced in word Canyon), Ke, Ko, Haa, Hi----is Mithuna, Gemini Hi, Hu, He, Ho, Da, Daa, Di, Du, De, Do --- is Karka or Cancer Ma, Maa, Mi, Mu, Me Mo, Ta, Ti, Tu Te ---are Simha or Leo Pa, Paa, Pi, Pu Pu Sa, Na Tha Pe, Po –Kanya or Virgo Ra,Raa, Ri, Ru, Re Ro, Ta Ti, Tu Te ---Tula orLibra To, Na, Naa, Ni, Nu, Ne, No Ya Yi Yu—Vrschika or Scorpio YE Yo Bha Bhi Bhu Dha Pha Dha Bhe—are called Dhanu or Sagittarius. Bho, Ja, Ji, Kha, Khi, Khu, Khe Kho Ga, Gaa Gi –are called Makara or Capricorn. Gu, Ge, Go Sa, Si, Su, Se So, Da –are called Kumbha or Aquarius. DAA, Di, Du, De, Do, Tha, Jha, Na, Chaa, Chi –are called Meena or Pisces.
The first alphabet of one’s name carries the Rasi. Usually at the time of birth an astrologer is contacted and he/she decides the star (constellation) in which the child is born and gives the child a name fitting to that moment and makes prediction for whole life of the child.
Just by knowing the Month of birth one cannot decide one’s birth sign as we see in the western calculation. But in Vedic astrology according to the situation of moon and constellations travelling with it is how it is decided. Moon changes from sign to another sometimes every two or three days time and thus birth sign also changes.
We have stated the first letters of the alphabet for your name and you can calculate your present birth sign and look to the prediction and also will be able to see your western style sign as well.
There are twelve houses and there are nine planets. These planets travel from one house to another according to time decided for them. There are three categories of their travel—yearly, monthly and daily. The timings are decided depending on the kind of calculation is being made. The twelve house are mainly meant for twelve things such as:
The first house, for one’s body, second house for wealth or money, third house for brother or family, fourth house for happiness or mental status, fifth house for children or family, sixth house enemy or opposition, seventh house for wife or spouse, eighth house for death, accident or harm, ninth house for religion/spirituality, tenth house for work or related activities, eleventh house for profits or gains and twelfth house for loss, cheating or theft etc. The nine planets control mainly the following: Sun controls one’s body or health, Moon controls the mind or mental status, Mars controls one’s power or strength, Mercury controls one’s speech or dealing manners, Jupiter controls one’s knowledge or realization capacity, Venus controls enthusiasm, power or stamina, Saturn over sees one’s misery or pains, Rahu and Ketu over see sinful deeds.
Sun stays in one house for one month, Moon stays two and half weeks in one house, Mars stays one and half months, Mercury stays for one month, Jupiter stays in one house for thirteen months, Venus stays one month and Saturn stays in one house for thirty months. Rahu and Ketu stay in their each house for eighteen months. It all depends how and what one is calculating for—yearly, monthly, weekly or daily. Our calculations are based upon Vedic astrology and not on western astrology.
Astrology is material science dealing with intellect and mind which are parts of subtle body. But this science can and is used for spiritual benefit by becoming careful or cautious about what is coming up in the future etc. Astrology is foretelling about what is coming so the person concerned becomes careful. Just like a person saying a cobra is going to enter in your house hearing which the homeowner takes a stick and gets ready to strike the cobra thus preventing it to enter the house so the people living in house remain safe. Or one may be advised to take care while driving since the prediction may be that the propensity for accidents in high in that week.
