Vaisnavas should observe only the pure and unmixed chaturdasi fast. \n  tava kara-kamala-vare nakham adbhuta-sringam\ndalita-hiranyakasipu-tanu-bhringam\nkesava dhrita-narahari-rupa jaya jagadisa hare \nO Lord Kesava\, O Lord of the Universe\, O remover of miseries of Your devotees\, all glories to You. You had adopted a form of half-lion and half man and killed the beelike demon Hiranyakasipu by using the spectacular nails on Your lotus hands. This act is so surprising because the bee usually tears at the heart of a lotus\, whereas in this instance You ripped the bee like Hiranyakasipu with Your lotus petal-like hands.

Kindly inform me how\, by giving even a little in charity\, one may easily become free of his sins.”\nPulastya Munī replied\, “O fortunate one\, you have asked me a good and confidential question\, which not even Brahmā\, Viṣṇu\, Śiva\, or Indra has ever asked. Please listen very carefully to my answer. \n“With the arrival of the month of Māgha [January-February] \, one should bathe\, carefully control his senses by giving up lust \, anger\, pride\, jealousy\, faultfinding\, and greed\, and meditate on the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa. O best of the brahmanas\, whoever hears about the origins and glories of these sacred fasts on the Ekadasi days goes directly to the abode of Lord Visnu after enjoying many different kinds of happiness in this material world. \n“Arjuna\, the son of Prtha\, asked the Lord\, ‘O Janardana\, what are the pious benefits of complete fasting\, eating only supper\, or eating but once at midday on Ekadasi\, and what are the regulations for observing the various Ekadasi days? AKASHA DEEPA DANAM (OFFERING A GHEE LAMP TO THE LORD) AND SINGING OF DAMODARASTAM ALONG WITH THE VRAJARAJA-SUTASTAKAM BEGINS ON THIS DAY AND LASTS UNTIL KARTIKA MONTH ENDS. \nYudhiṣṭhira Mahārāja said\, “O Madhūsudana\, what is the name of the Ekādaśī that occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Āśvina [September-October]? Please be merciful and tell this to me.” \nThe Supreme Lord\, Śrī Kṛṣṇa\, replied\, “O king\, please listen as I explain the glories of this Ekādaśī–Pāpāṅkuśā Ekādaśī–which removes all sins. On this day one should worship the Deity of Padmanābha\, the lotus-naveled Lord\, according to the rules and regulations. By doing so\, one achieves whatever heavenly pleasures he wants in this world and at last attains liberation. Simply by offering one’s humble obeisances unto Lord Viṣṇu\, the rider of Garuḍa\, once can achieve the same merit as is won by performing great penances for a long time with completely controlled senses.
