Brief history

One day, Lord Kṛṣṇa appeared again in the dream of Mādhavendra Purī and said, “I am feeling a burning sensation in My body, therefore please go to Jagannath Purī and bring sandalwood paste from there to smear on My body. On the way to Jagannath Purī, Mādhavendra Purī stopped at the town of Remunā and took Darshan of Lord Gopīnath. Mādhavendra Purī asked the pujäré (priest) about which item in the offering Lord Gopīnath likes. The pujäré replied, “The famous item Lord Gopīnath likes is kñér.” Kñér is a sweet pudding made from rice boiled with milk, and when cooked, sugar is added. When it comes down to body temperature, it is offered to the Lord. This item is also called amritakeli. The Lord is offered twelve full pots of amritakeli daily. This prasäda is very famous here.
Mādhavendra Purī desired to taste the kñér so he could prepare the same item for his deity of Śrī Gopāl in Govardhan. Having this kind of desire is not called motivated or offensive because desiring to please an authentic Gurü and Lord Kṛṣṇa is called desireless. Mādhavendra Purī kept that desire inside his heart and did not reveal it to anyone. The nature of the Lord is that He fulfills the desire of His pure devotee. Thus, on the next day, when an offering of kñér was made to the deity of Lord Gopīnath, He stole one pot from the twelve pots of kñér from the offering and hid it behind His own deity form. When the pujäré fell asleep, the Lord told him in his dream to give the pot of kñér which He stole from the offering and kept it on His hind side for Mādhavendra Purī. When the pujäré woke up, he found the kñér pot behind the Gopīnath deity and, taking the kñér pot, he searched for Mādhavendra Purī and found him outside the town sitting under a tree. The pujäré then offered the kñér pot to Mādhavendra Purī with great respect. The pujäré was amazed about how much love Lord Kṛṣṇa has for His true devotees. From that day onwards, the pujäré understood that the Lord; who is the creator, maintainer, and destroyer of everything; even steals to please His devotees. Mādhavendra Purī was in ecstasy for having the kñér prasädam and ate the kñér prasädam with great honor. When people came to know about how the Lord stole kñér for Mādhavendra Purī, they respected Mādhavendra Purī. Till that moment, no one knew who Mādhavendra Purī was, but after the incident, everyone learnt that he was a great devotee and came in flocks to see him.
After some time, Mādhavendra Purī left for Jagannath Purī and collected enough of a load of sandalwood paste and proceeded towards Govardhan. He wanted to put the sandalwood paste on his Śrī Gopāl deity to remove the heat from His body. While Mādhavendra Purī was on the way to Govardhan, he stopped in Remunā again and stayed there for a few days. Lord Kṛṣṇa appeared in the dream of Mādhavendra Purī and said, “My deity in Govardhan and My deity here in Remunā are one and the same. Therefore, you can smear the sandalwood paste on this deity of Mine here in Remunā town.” A true devotee cannot prevent the orders of Lord Kṛṣṇa, and thus he smeared the sandalwood paste on the Gopīnath deity in Remunā.
